Shell's clean-up effort of oil leak has been completed
Oct 30, 2024
Shell would like to confirm that we have completed clean-up of the channel between Bukom Besar and Kechil Islands near the original source of the oil leak on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
A joint inspection with authorities was conducted yesterday and authorities have signed off on the status of our completion effort.
Over the past week, we have taken steps to ensure we are as thorough as possible in our clean-up effort with the use of water flushing and jetting of any remnant oil stains on rocks and infrastructure, together with the deployment of containment and absorbent booms.
We have also worked closely with the authorities to monitor the situation through the use of drones. In addition, we deployed a helicopter to carry out aerial surveillance of the waters both immediately around and beyond Bukom together with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and an independent oil spill response expert on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
We are thankful for the support from authorities in managing the incident, and will continue to cooperate with them on the investigations.

Clean-up of oil spill progressing with no new oil sightings reported at sea and ashore on Tuesday
Shell is progressing well with the clean-up effort on Tuesday (October 22, 2024) following an oil leak from a land-based pipeline on the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Singapore on Bukom.
Most of the oil around Bukom has been cleaned up with only small patches of light sheens around Bukom island and Bukom Kechil remaining. Sheen is a very thin layer of oil floating on the water surface.
Shell has not received any reports of new oil sightings at sea and ashore on Tuesday. As a precaution, we have put in resources to support any clean-up that may be required.
We have deployed vessels and absorbent booms to remove any remnants of oil in the vicinity of Bukom. We will continue working closely with the relevant authorities on the clean-up effort required and to monitor the situation.
Our priority is to ensure the safety of people and to limit environmental impact as we work on resolving this as quickly as possible. We appreciate the support and cooperation from authorities and our communities as we work diligently to minimise the impact from this incident.

Shell working with relevant authorities to manage clean-up effort following oil spill
Shell is actively working with all relevant authorities to manage the clean-up effort following an oil leak on Sunday (October 20, 2024) from a land-based pipeline. The leak has stopped since around 3pm yesterday. We have deployed containment booms, anti-pollution crafts and spraying of dispersant to contain and break up the oil as part of on-going clean-up effort.
We estimate that approximately 30-40 metric tonnes of slop, which is a mixture of oil and water, was leaked into the sea. Our priority is to ensure the safety of people and to limit environmental impact as we work on resolving this as quickly as possible. We appreciate the support and cooperation from authorities and our communities as we work diligently to minimise the impact. Further information will be released as it becomes available
